About Mini Vinnies
Mini Vinnies are a worldwide group for primary school children, developed by the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP). Mini Vinnies are encourage to see Christ in themselves and others through prayer, discussion and looking at social issues. Please click the links above for further information about Mini Vinnies and St Vincent de Paul.
Mini Vinnies at Holy Family are a group of eight children who meet regularly to learn more about prayer and the importance of practical works. The children are supported by Mrs Backhouse and Mrs Cole, a parent volunteer.
Each meeting starts with a prayer, a scripture reading and a discussion/reflection on the readings. The Mini Vinnies discuss how they can help others, family, friends, the local community and people in need, particularly those in developing countries.
The Work Of The Mini Vinnies
Commissioning Mass – In September our children attended a special Welcoming Mass at Carmel College. They joined pupils from other schools to be commissioned as Mini Vinnie and SVP representatives.
Foodbank Appeal – The group supported the local Foodbank Appeal and collected tinned foods and cartons of UHT milk. Our Mini Vinnie representatives then helped to deliver the donations to the Foodbank.
Christmas Cards – During their weekly meetings near to Christmas, the children made special Christmas cards. With the help of the Parish SVP member the cards were then delivered to elderly members of the Parish.
Refugee Project – In support of the Refugee Project in Newcastle, an appeal was issued to families for donations of food and toiletries. A member of the Project visited school to collect the donations and explain their work in a special whole school assembly.
Easter Egg Appeal – This appeal was also for the local Foodbank. Our Mini Vinnie group wanted to give families who would be using the Foodbank some Easter Eggs. They had a fantastic response to their appeal.
Easter Cards – The children made some Easter cards during weekly meetings which were sent to members of the Parish.
Stations Of The Cross – The children were invited to attend Stations of the Cross at St Augustine’s Church, Darlington. They joined Mini Vinnie and SVP representatives from other school in Church, which was then followed by a special St Patrick’s Day celebration in St Augustine’s Parish Centre.
Bauleni Appeal – In partnership with Carmel Youth SVP, Holy Family Mini Vinnies supported Fr Tony Cornforth’s appeal on behalf of Bauleni Special Needs School in Zambia. Fr Cornforth often visits the school and in the past has engaged the support of numerous schools throughout the Diocese to help Bauleni School. Our Mini Vinnies appealed to families for donations of items such as football strips, balls and other sporting equipment, stationery, reading books, clothes and toiletries.
Thank You for supporting the Mini Vinnies
